What are Parabens?

Parabens are a type of chemical that is used as a low cost preservative in a variety of personal-care and cosmetic products which is widely used by many companies. Avoiding the use of parabens is a good idea as it may pose health issues for those who use or consume products containing them. Parabens are a topic of controversy, due to consumer concerns about their safety. Parabens have been linked to an increased risk in Cancer. Although this link to cancer remains to be proven, Pre de Provence prefers to adopt a best practice approach and choose to stay away from parabens. However, it is a fact that paraben can cause other problems. For example, some people may be allergic to it and may develop rashes.

What is Tretrasodium EDTA?

Tretrasodium EDTA helps to soften hard water. Water can sometimes contain metal ions such as calcium and iron. These can make water hard, which is a problem because hard water won’t get you clean. Tretrasodium EDTA neutralises the metal ions in hard water and allows the soap to do its job.

SLS are commonly used in many soaps, shampoos, body washes, detergents and many other cleaning products. It is a caustic substance useful for removing grease. SLS can dry out skin by stripping the protective lipids from the surface of the skin. We DO NOT use any sulphates in our products.

What does DEA stand for?

DEA is diethanolamine, a chemical that is used as a wetting agent in shampoos, lotions, creams and other cosmetics. DEA is used widely because it provides a rich lather in shampoos and keeps a favorable consistency in lotions and creams. DEA by itself is not harmful but while sitting on the stores shelves or in your cabinet at home, DEA can react with other ingredients in the cosmetic formula to form an extremely potent carcinogen called nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA). NDEA is readily absorbed through the skin and has been linked with stomach, esophagus, liver and bladder cancers.

Why you should avoid mineral oils?

Mineral oil is used in many personal care products. It is a by-product of gasoline. Mineral oil sits on the surface of the skin, is difficult to absorb and can clog pores.

What is Hydroxy Ethylidene Diphosphonic Acid

HEDA is also used to prevent the effects of hard water. It is not a toxic substance and does not linger on the surface of your skin.

What is meant by triple-milled?

Milling is shredding the soap and putting it back together again in high pressure presses. This process is repeated three times in ‘triple-milled’ soaps. This process helps to evenly distribute the fragrance throughout the soap, makes the texture smoother and the bar of soap harder and longer lasting.
